Breeding
Dam Abby was purchased from the successful sporthorse breeding stud, Cheleken Equestrian. Her progeny have showed a lot of promise as sport horses with Cheleken Arwen competing with success as an eventer with Megan Finlayson.
Abby is by Aberlou, arguably the most prepotent eventing sire in New Zealand. Historically, Aberlou was rated second for sires of eventers in NZ and third for show jumpers. Aberlou’s most famous son was Messiah, World Three Day Eventing champion at Stockholm, and bronze medallist at Barcelona. He is also the sire of Delta who represented New Zealand at the Atlanta Olympics.
Sire Pico Bello was imported to New Zealand as a 5 yr old to begin a career in showjumping as well as standing at stud. He was campaigned in sport by Mount View rider Ike Unsworth, very successfully up to Grand Prix level. He was then sold to Australia, continuing his success with many wins and placings in World Cup and Grand Prix classes under David Dobson.
Pico Bello’s sire Calvados is bred from the best of French Performance stock. The sire of Calvados, Uriel produced more than 100 International SJ horses. Pico Bello’s dam, Zellie is by Joost, the Holsteiner stallion that is one of the founders of Dutch Show Jumping breeding.
